Chapter Seven

TESS LET OUT A startled cry when she opened her eyes to find she was no longer in Michael’s car. Nor was she in the gas station waiting for Michael to finish pumping gas.

She was so deep within a vision, she was sitting in the front seat of a moving van.

And if it had been anything more than a vision, if she were really sitting in the van’s front seat, she might have slid off the seat or even slipped into a different, less comfortable position. Or perhaps she might have curled into a fetal position and closed her eyes against the horror that suddenly gripped her.

She’d only meant to close her eyes for a moment, only meant to force her aching limbs to relax and hope that her headache might fade. And somehow she’d again connected to the murderer.

She turned and found she was mere few feet from him, with no other room in which to hide or escape. In this dream state, everything was incredibly enhanced. Her terror sent her heart racing at a dangerous speed. She felt as if millions of tiny spiders crawled all over her. The light, despite the clouds that hid the sun, hurt her eyes. She tried to swallow, but the lump in her throat felt as if she’d managed to swallow a golf ball.

And that smell . . .

Her stomach did a somersault. That locker room smell touched her like a huge, icy claw. And his closeness sent terror through her so strong she thought she might be sick to her stomach.

In the driver’s seat, Raymond jerked toward her. Then he slammed on the brakes. Objects in the van—an empty paper cup, a wadded paper bag from a fast food restaurant, the CD case on the console between them—all flew forward. Oddly, of all the things that touched Tess’s senses, the feel of motion did not. She didn’t feel the seat she sat in or any sense that she was sliding forward. Nor did she feel a seatbelt.

“What the hell?” He turned to her.

There was no longer any question of whether or not he could see her. He looked right at her.

“You are there, aren’t you? I can barely see you, but I know you’re there. And how can you be there if you’re back in the back of the van with the rest of them? Unless the one I have back there is the wrong woman!”

Tess tried to concentrate. He still wasn’t certain who she was.

“Tell me how you do this!” he ranted at her.

Tess had no idea how she did this, but she couldn’t let him know that. It would be to her advantage if he thought she could do it anytime, anywhere. But could he hear her if she spoke? There was only one way to find out.

“It doesn’t matter,” she said.

“Yeah, right. I might not be able to see you as well as I feel you, but at least I’m able to touch you.” He reached out and slapped her face.
